Show CHAUFFEUR ON TRIAL FOR MANSLAUGHTER J. V. Bernstrom. driver of the automobile automo-bile which was wrecked on the night of September 17 In the southeastern part of the city, when Mrs. E. E. I-awless re- ceived Injuries resulting in her death, was placed on preliminary trial before Justice Jus-tice L. R. Martlneau. Jr.. yesterday. The charge Is involuntary manslaughter. Pred Wells, one of t he fl ve oerupa n t s of the machine, was the principal witness wit-ness examined during the day. He recounted re-counted how one of the front tires had exploded, causing the car to plunge into a pole by the roadside. He stated that . Mrs. Lawless and "Teddy"' Abramson were riding on the dashboard when the accident occurred. WVlls gave It as bis opinion that the machine was being driven at a speed of about twenty-five miles per hour. Asked If members of the party i w-ere Intoxicated at the time, he replied I that they were not, but admitted tha't I they had been drinking beer. j The hearing will be resumed at 10 o'clock this morning. |
