Tho hunt is going on by special permission of thc Lnited States government and Is for the purpose of killing all the mountain Hons possible to prevent their preying upon the young elk. deer, sheep, antelope and other wild animals in tho park. The big lion was Jumped at a point near Gardiner and led thy hunters and dogs a chase of forty-tlvc miles before It was killed, near the starting point. Not onco did tho dogs divert from the trail. Last winter tho kennels secured a contract con-tract with tho United States government to train dogs for packing and exploring purposes, and before tho permission to hunt in the national preserve was granted many persons made aiipllcatlon to go after t lie lions. The method pursued In hunting thc Hons is to trail a beast to a tree or somo spot whero he seeks safety after desperately des-perately trying to outwit the pack of dogs chasing him. When found the Hon is shot. When ho falls to tho ground wounded, he alights in tho midst of a pack of dogs, and a tierce fight follows, terminating in tho lion's death. |
