Show REVENUE LIKELY TO EXCEEOJSTM Treasury Department Makes Public Customs Figures for Fiscal Year. WASHINGTON, April S. Figures were made public in a treasury department depart-ment statement tonight showing that the rovenues from the customs during the fiscal year, which ends June 30, 1914, almost certainly will meet and probably exceed the estimates mad when congress passed the new tariff Jaw. The statement, prepared by Assistant Secretary Malburn, in charge of customs, cus-toms, 6aid: "It was estimated that the receipts from customs for the fiscal year 191-1, which included three months under tho tariff act of 1909. and nino months under the present tariff act, approved October 3. 191.1, would amount to $270;000,000, resulting in a loss of .$-19,-000,000 from the customs recoipts of the previous years. "Tho total customs collections for the nine months just ended amotmtod to $225,500,000. showing a Iosb for tho nine-month period of $24,750,000, as compared with tho collections for the same period during tho fiscal year ended June 30, J913. As this loss is only one-half of tho estimated loss for the whole year, it is probable that tho receipts for the fiscal yoar ending Juno 30, 3914, will excee'd tho estimate. esti-mate. "Tt is to be noted that tho loss in roveuuo during the months of January and February. 1914, amouuted iu round number to six and ten million dollars, respectively. This was caused by tho falling off of tho duties paid upon sugar, as that commodity was retained in bonded warehouses pending tho reduction re-duction on sugar duties March 1, J913. Customs receipts for these two months amountod to $23,500,000 and $17,-500,000, $17,-500,000, respectively. The customs receipts re-ceipts for the mouth of March just closed were ncarlv $26,000,000. as against $27,500,000 "for tho corresponding correspond-ing month of 1913, showing a loss of but $1,500,000 and a recovery of receipts re-ceipts as compared with February of this year of over $8,000,000. "In viow of tho above figures if. now appears that a monthly average of less than $15,000,000 for April, May and Juno, the remaining threo months of tho present fiscal year, would bring tho total of customs recoipts tip to $270,000,000, the original estimate for tliis fiscal year. It is probablo that receipts for tho thrco remaining months will exceed this averago of $15,000,000 and that the total receipts for tho fiscal fis-cal year will run over the estimate of $270,000,000," |
