SAIMON", Idaho, Sept 10 A movement move-ment has been .started to place Salmon on tho "Park to Park" route by building a road from tho Rlgholc basin, across the summit of the Bitter Root mountains at the head of Northfork creek, connecting at GibbonsvlIIe with tho existing stage road. This would make one of the links In the proposed auto road from Glacier park to Yellowstone park. At present the heavy auto travel between Spokane. Missoula Mis-soula and westnrn Montana to Ogdcn, Salt Lako and Boise goes by way of Hol-ena Hol-ena or Butte, crossing the Bitter Hoot range onco and the Continental divide twice. The proposed Bitter Root-North-fork road 'will place Salmon upon the main thoroughfare. It Is said that the national forest service, serv-ice, the people of Ravalli county, Montana, Mon-tana, and the county commissioners of Lemhi county are fully aware of tho benefits ben-efits to be derived from the building of such a road and that all will ro-opcrat.o in the undertaking. The Montana officials offi-cials arc willing to build In this direction direc-tion at once If they can be assured that Lemhi county will finish the work on this side. W. w. White of Missoula, supervisor super-visor of the Bitter Root national forost, was in tsaimon last wceic on nusiness in connection with tho construction of the proposed road. That the Gllmore & Pittsburg railroad forms part of tho Hill system is believed to have been definitely settled by the recent re-cent llllng of the annual statement of the Northern Pacific, which sdiows that railroad to hold most of the securities of the Gllmore & Pittsburg, On account, of the cost of construction and tho heavy ateel used, It has always been believed that the Gllmore & Pittsburg was part of some large system and that Salmon was but a temporary terminal. It is now said that the Gilmorc & Pittsburg Is destined to be a link In the Butte-Bolsc-WInnc-mucca road. |
