Show SAFE IS BLOWN OPEN, BUT i LOOT SECURED Burglars Attack Strong Pox of the Western Packing Company. Burglars broke iuto the office of the Western Packing compauv at 3-17 West Second South street some timo during Tuesday night, or early Wednesday morning, morn-ing, and niade an attempt to rob the company safe, but after blowiug open the outside doors of tho iron vault they were evidently frightened away. Ko loot was secured. Entrance to tho building was gained by climbing upon a freight car which stood at the rear of the building, and then forcing a rear window. Tho safe doors were blown open by the use of nitro-glycerin. A hole had been drilled near the combination lock and the explosives inserted so that when it was set off tho locks wero -destroyed and the doors left so they could be easily opened. The safe showed that an attempt had boon mado to chisel open tho interior in-terior iron doors, but tho robbers wero evidently frightened away beforo they had time to finish the job. The break was reported to the police j about 7 o'clock Wednesday, when an j employee of the office went to work. Tho burglars, when they made their esit, went out through a rear door, which thev left open. Furniture iu the office was' thrown about somo by the force of tho explosion, but othe'r than the breaking of the safe combination, combi-nation, no damage was dono. On a shelf just inside the outside doors of the safe was a $5 gold piece, which the thieves overlooked, and in oue of the office desks was $5 worth of stamps, which had not been disturbed. |
