Show ICE FALLS ON HOT DAY Empire State Scene of Most Remarkable Remarka-ble Storm on Eecord. Iscwburg, N. Y., was visited Thursday Thurs-day afternoon by the most terrific storm ever seen here. It wa.3 not an ordinary hail storm, but an ice storm, nuggets of solid,. ice as big as butternuts coming com-ing down for fully five minutes. They covered the lawns and fields like a blanket of snow and were afterwards gathered up in large water pails.- ' The day was hot and sultrv. Tho storm camo from tho northwest arid for ten minute3 before the rain and ico stones fell, the wind blew a gale and the thunder and lightning wero playing so fearfully that timid persons took, td the cellars.. The downpour of rain filled some "of the stroots from curb to curb three inches and moro deep, toro up the paving, flooded cellars and did other damage. Tho ico falls did great damacre, such fruits as cherries nd strawberries, bushes, Bmall trees and plants being destroyed. Hundreds of panes of glass were broken. Tho oldest inhabitants, ennnot recall anything liko tho storm of ice balls. It is impossible to estimate esti-mate the damage, but it will be many thousands. |
