Show Machen end Groff Are low in Prison Both Surrender Themselves to the Federal Authorities. Authori-ties. WASHINGTON. Feb. 7. August W. Machen, former general superintendent of the free delivery, postal service, and Dlller B. GrofC of this city, both under sentence of two years' Imprisonment and $10,000 fine for postal conspiracy, today surrendered themselves to the United States Marshal and were placed In the cellroom of the city hall. Samuel A. Groff, whose coursel sought to have his removal to the penitentiary doferred because of Illness, was ordered brought Into court, and later was placed In the cellroom with the others. Must Carry Out Sentence. The case came up today In the Criminal Crim-inal court on receipt of a mandate handed down by the Court of Appeals directing the Immediate execution of the sentence of Machen, Dr. Lorenz and the Groffs. Attorney Maddox, for Samuel Sam-uel A.GrofT, produced a certificate of two physicians saying lhat he was not in condition to be moved from his house and suggested that If the District Attorney wanted to Imperil his client's life as well ,is his liberty, he had better take a gun nnd go to tho house. District Attorney Beach replied that Samuel Groff, his surety and his attorney attor-ney had been advised of the possibility of this mandate for some time, that Samuel Groff had visited the District Attorney's office last Thursday and that Groffs son yesterday communicated communi-cated with the Dlstrlrt Attorney's office of-fice to know what clothing his father might take with nim to the penitentiary today. In these circumstances the District Dis-trict Attorney suggested it was rather a sudden stroke of Illness. Mr. Beach Insisted upon tho Immediate appearance appear-ance of the prisoner, and he was sent for- . , Nothing has been heard today of Dr. Lorenz, who is reported 111 at his home In Toledo. O. Machen and tho Groffs was taken to the Moundsvllle, W. Va., penitentiary this afternoon. |
