Word reached hero tonight that the steamer Demara, from Liverpool for Halifax, had foundered foun-dered off Musquodoblt harbor, about sixty miles to tho' eastward of Halifax. Tho chief oficer. with eighteen members of the crow, reached Hhorp In a life-boat. Tho captain -with threo passengers and tho balance of tho crew also loft tho steamer at the same time! but are still missing. Tho chief officer of tho Oamara reported that the steamer struck somo object about five miles off shoro enrly today, and at onco sprang a leak and began lo settle. A blinding snowstorm was raging. When the llfo boats drew away tho steamer was deep In tho water Capt. Gorst and tho others who wero In the second boat stood bv the stcamor, and nothing has been heard of them since. Tho Damara left St. Johns, N. F.,'last Saturday with 900 tons of cargo. Tho weather Is stormy along the coast and a heavy sea has been running nil day. Tugs left here tonight to search for tho steamer and tho missing llfo boat. |
