Show Many Jockeys Are Superstitious Gcorgo Odom Believes That Red Knight Is Pursued by the Hand of Fate. Jockeys are proverbially superstitious and probably George Odom, America's most popular rider, Is most prone to a falling In that direction. Odom has had the mount on Red Knight In several of his recent races, and each time he has been Induced to go up In the saddle only after a deal of persuasion on the part of the trainer of the stable of P. S. Randolph. Ran-dolph. Only that Odom rides Red ICnlght better than any boy now In the East It Is more than probable some other jockey would have ridden the horse yesterday yes-terday and In his previous race. The deep rooted aversion the Georgia boy entertains of Red Knight dates back to Brooklyn Handicap day In 1902, when Relna won her great victory'. In the first race of that day came the accident ac-cident In which Jockey Booker .lost his life by falling off Red Knight's back. The collapse of Red Knight knocked Martle Lewis off her stride and Odom went down also. Later In the meeting Red Knight threw Burns and late In the -fall little Callahan suffered a severe tumble from off his bdek at Morris Park. So notorious did the 111 luck of Red Knight become that year he was dubbed the "fatal horse" by the jockeys and a "hoodoo" was believed to attach not only to the horse, but to every boy wh'o rode him. Right after Booker's death Odom was offered the mount on Red Knight and he refused it. Yesterday Yester-day the great rider felt more than usually usu-ally disinclined to ride the "fatal horse" and it was only after a long confab shortly before 2 o'clock that Odom's name was sent to the clerk of the scales as Red Knight's rider In the fifth race. "Hoodoo" to Bettors, Too. Evidently the bettors arc too hard crusted to take any stock In the theory of "hoodoo" horses, for thoy went at Red Knight In the fifth race as If he were an assured Winner before the race had been run. "Tim" Payne flashed him at 4 to 1 and before you could turn around 2 to 1 and 9 to 5 could be obtained ob-tained only with an effort. Red Knight carried a world of money yesterday, and when he finished third to South Trimble at 12 to 5 and Akela the books garnered clerk money for a week. South Trimble showed a lot of new and sudden speed. This horse Is fast becoming a thorn In the sides of the handlcappers aril form players. If South Trimble comesAilong a week hence and is beaten twenty lengths by Akelat what then? Ask tho stewards. Oakland Entries for Monday. Special to The Tribune. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 19.
