Show l ANOTHER GRAFT I FOR 5UPT. JONES Hi More Padding; lore II Perjury. III Got Twenty Dollars on False If ( Statement and Ander-lf! Ander-lf! son Helped. Hii Taxpayers Do Not Hind It Because Hi Iff Jonea Is Apostlo Penrose's HltS Son-ln-Law. Hue Superintendent Willlnni R. Jones Is Hill a ncw ouendcr against the tnx- Hnl ! payers of Salt Lake county. Nor have Hl all of his offenses bcon uncovered. A Hfj I new case has just been stumbled onto, j In fact, It Is very difficult to look Into I a! it anything1 which Superintendent Jones, II f an mClri'' cloos' witnout finding It He perjured himself for $1S.35 on the Iff If "tn of ln3t September, at the same time H padding- the Infirmary payrolls and Uli helping to euchre the county out of llill ITlonoy tnn- was not earned and which Will n tlle 31st of AuBust, last year, Hill "with the assistance of Commissioner Hilt. James H. Anderson, he extracted $20 i from the treasury for services he did Hit ' 7101 and could not have performed. The Hllr perjury and the particulars will be Hsjf found in the flies for September, 1903, Hill In the Auditor's office. The amount Hli was extorted from the county on war- j rant No. 3275, In order to secure this Hp warrant Superintendent Jones made a Hit false affidavit before P. O. Perkins, Hlf deputy auditor. Its correctness was HI certified to by ,James H, Anderson, 11 f president of the Board of Commlssion- Iln the same month Superintendent Jones padded the Infirmary payrolls 567 and swore to and. also certified to the correctness and the legality of the same. The amounts paid out Avere on warrants Nos. 3275 and 32S0, Inclusive. No service was performed for tho 5C7. Jt was a clean-cut steal. But Jones Is a son-in-law to Apostle Penrose and there Is no one who will dare prosecute him for perjury, for extortion or for payroll padding. Besides, he knows too much about the way Salt Lake county's affairs are being conducted. And some one might tell who got that wagon-load of potatoes and the carrots and the porkers and the other live slock. As a son-in-law of one of God's servants ser-vants on earth though he swore to false claims, fed rotten mutton to inmates in-mates of the Infirmary, padded the payrolls and did other things that have landed many a man behind the bars of the State's prison, Superintedent Jones Is immune. Suppose the taxpnyers do groan under un-der the burden! Suppose the publlo funds are used to support the superintendent superin-tendent of the Infirmary, isn't he a son-in-law to the editor of the Deseret News and to Apostle Penrose? Is there an officer who will dare raise his hand against Jones and In protection to the public? - It Is conceded that If Chairman William Wil-liam Spry desires anything in tho gift of Gov. Cutler he will have no occasion to go begging for It. It Is believed he will be made the head of the Land Board instead of "Fussy Jimmy." It Is a good, easy Job, such a one that Chairman Spry would have no trouble filling while looking afterl his Tooele county farming interests, and it is not at all unlikely that he will land the place. "Fussy Jimmy" Is no small shakes as a land dealer, seeing the success with which he put through the Infirmary Infirm-ary deal, and the public will draw a sigh of relief when it Is learned that Chairman Spry and not tho present chairman of the Board of Commissioners Commission-ers is ut the head of the State Land Board. o Two persons are mentioned as likely lo become secretary to Gov. Cutler. One of these Is Willard Doan, a former Representative In the Legislature for Salt Lake county, and Deputy Revenue Collector Ed Jenkins. Jenkins Is a rustler among the young men of Salt Lako county and was ono of the most active of the supporters o John C. Cutler before the convention. He has many friends In the city and it is believed he would make a competent and an obliging secretary. He Is a son-in-law to Mr. Cutler and Is said lo enjoy the full confidence of the merchant, as well as the good will of the dominant political faction of the Republican party. Governor Cutler committed a grave breach In official decorum Friday evening even-ing by going to tho theater as a "second "sec-ond nlghter" and making his presence especially conrpIcuouB in one ot tho boxes. As the soon-to-be first man of tho State he can never bo permitted to miss Joining the "first nlghters." And It is quite certain if "Fussy Jimmy" had not been so busy with his Infirmary deal he would not have permitted the Governor-elect to fall Into such an error. The bills for drugs alone, on pauper accbunt, cost Salt Lake county $2GG50 last month. This Is not an unusual amount, either. This Item Is something enormous during the winter months. A Board of Commissioners- which has any regard for the taxpayers of Salt Lake county would provide a less expensive ex-pensive way to secure drugs than Is now in vogue. This matter 13 little short of criminal neglect. It must be an amusing matter for Apostle Penrose when hd thinks how easily his non-partisan school election scheme was gobbled up by the churchmen church-men and the "jack Mormons" of Salt Lake City. "Fussy Jimmy" turns white behind the gills when anyone asks him why he put the infirmary land deal through so near the time he Is to retire. He admits ad-mits that there was necessity for steps along the same line more than four years ago. But he had not secured any options on "suitable" property until a few weeks ago. "Don't you regard Commissioner "Wilson "Wil-son t an Independent official?" asked a Joint building employee. "Independent of whom?" "Why, anybody Commissioner Anderson An-derson for Instance." "Certninly! He is so Independent of 'Fussy Jimmy' that should1 'Fussy Jimmy' Jim-my' take an emetic while In Cache" county coun-ty Commissioner Wilson would throw up hit?, boots." Senator Reed Smoot was in the city Saturday and held a few Informal conferences con-ferences with well-known Republican politicians. I TV. D. Livingston was In the city Saturday Sat-urday from Sanpete county. He now. claims a safe lead over his Democratic opponent Ferdinand Erlcksbn. for Judge of the Seventh district. It will be Mr. Erlckson's time to nmke a similar sim-ilar claim tomorrow. This Seventh district dis-trict matter swings like a pendulum from Erlekson to Livingston and back again every othrr dv. The only sure thing is a contest suit. The canvass of tho vole in Snlt Lako county has resulted In many changes ome of which are almost startling.- If ihere were any way lo have' a recount nf the ballots there is no doubt thnt 'he American party nominees and tho Socialists would gain several hundred votes. Never have more bitter partisan" constituted election boards than thos" Hmen in a majority of the districts of Salt Lake county. Theso boards had no trouble counting the Reoubllcan votes all right, but thev made airport criminal errors in the American pnrtv count, and it Is believed tho ballot" themselves would reveal gross carelessness, careless-ness, if not actual fraud. But It was expected. f Senators Kenrns and Smoot nnd Con. "remnn Howell will go to Washington Washing-ton the first of December, Congress will reconvene the second week. |
