Show ASSAULT OX MISS BURTON". Girl Did Not Know She Had Been Cut for Some Minutes. Shortly after i o'clock on tho afternoon of October 10. whllo Mary Burton, the sixteen-year-old daughter of Robert Kur-ton, Kur-ton, a well-known stock broker, was walking walk-ing up Main street on tho way to her home, sho waa attacked from behind by an nssallant armed with a knife. Tho man crept up stealthily from behind be-hind and like a flash reached around tho girl's neck with his arm and mado a slash at her throat with tho knife. Ho then broke and ran down tho street Miss Burton did not scream for she did not realize that sho had been cut until sovcral moments afterward, when sho felt tho warm blood trickling down her neck. She went straight home and told her mother of tho afTalr. after which aho wont to tho office of Dr. C. S. Wilcox, whero her wound was dressed. Although the cutting took placo upon the principal thoroughfare of tho city at an hour when the streets are crowded, no one but a high school toy witnessed tho assault The lad was very reticent about tho affair and maintained a complcto silence si-lence until two days following tho assault, when he told his story to a newspaper man. Ml&s Burton's wound was not a serious one, as tho knife blade struck her chin, thus preventing a scveranco of tho Jugular Jugu-lar vein. Tho girl did not oven turn around to look nt her asttnllant nnd was unablo to glvo any description of him. |
