Show ARE ALL RACES GETTING WHITE? It is well known that according to the modern "revelations," the Indians are to become "a wblte and a dellght-somo dellght-somo people;" but they have made progress backward) in the way of de-Hghtsomenes8, de-Hghtsomenes8, with a celerity and force that speak louder for the vices of civilization than for tho fulfillment of prophecy. But now comes Professor J. W. Mc-Ghee, Mc-Ghee, the noted ethnologist, saying that the natural conditions of the earth are such that the black races are steadily growing lighter, and will continue In that progress until all men finally become be-come white. Professor Otis Mason, following' Professor Pro-fessor McGhee, calls attention to the gradual cooling of the earth, and declares de-clares that this will affect the color of all races, and that the entire human race will in time be brunette. One says all will be white, and the other says all will be dark. And there v.ou aro; the theory la that the great geological processes now going on will bring the Eskimos down from the Arctics, the inhabitants of the temperate tem-perate zone to the equator. We should think ourselves that Professor Mason is more likely to be right, especially at the first, and that so far as climatic conditions affect complexion, those who are driven to the equator will first of all be made black. But t is the climate tho pontroller of the color of the various races? It cannot can-not be so shown. The Eskimo Is dark, though living In the Arctics; the Chinaman China-man is dark, though living in the temperate tem-perate zone. The Japanese, who live on islands and under conditions not materially ma-terially different from the BrRish, are dark, and the British are white. And so it goea. Climate may, and no doubt does, have at least a temporary modifying modi-fying influence on complexion; but it Is by no means the sole controlling cause of differences; and the scientists should not be so sure of their forecasts. |
