Show TRADE, BUSINESS, AND FINANCE. The nearlng of completion of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad Is beginning to awaken the spirit of the people, and plans for celebrating that completion aro causing much interest. inter-est. An excursion to and from Los Angeles An-geles appears to be one of the fixed events, and doubtless appropriate ceremonies cere-monies will bo indulged in, to celebrate the great and long-awaited event, which ia sure to be accomplished by the end of the year. The announcement of the extension of the Chicago & Northwestern from Casper, Cas-per, Wyoming, to this city, is one of great interest for Utah. The extension to Ogden Is entirely practicable, on a survey made many years ago, and which at the time was pronounced to be the most favorable of any route through the mountains. The coming of this road would be gladly welcomed. ' The Moffat line has made no special announcement during the week, but Is surely working hltherward from Denver. Den-ver. JThe recent reorganization of tho directorate is understood to be In the interest of energy and efficient push. The Western Pacific ia working quietly quiet-ly yet strongly on the San Francisco end of the construction of thut line from the coast to this city. The lines are fully surveyed, and the articles of Incorporation Incorpora-tion are filed In the three States. So much has been expended on this line that Its construction ought to be a practical prac-tical certainly, and we believe It la. The mines now producing within this State are turning out better than . a half million dollars' value a week, and the year's product will amount to close upon thirty million dollars. The Utah mines maintain handsomely the high repute they have held for so long, In permanence of ore bodies and' In business-like management. The reduction plants of the valley, with excellent management man-agement and vigorous enterprise In providing pro-viding and enlarging facilities, handle the masses of ore in excellent style. The smelters are the pride of the valley, in an industrial and business way. The strength of the business situation in .the State at large, caused by .the great mining production, the abundant crops, and the good prices for cattle, sheep, and wool, Is very great. An example ex-ample of It Is seen in the reports of the banks organized under the State laws, a phenomenal showing. All tho statements state-ments indicate great progress; business Is very active, and an unusual amount of money la in circulation. One of the State banks has deposits of nearly six million dollars, which Is more than all the banks of the State had but a few years ago. In this city, a movement of business men during the week was directed toward obtaining a reduction of the charges by the Bell Telephone company 268 of tho business men have signed a protest against the present schedule of that company, and a conference with both telephone companies is invited for tomorrow evening, with a view to settling set-tling the vexed question. Business in town Is fairly active and collections are good. Bank clearances of the week showed the gratifying in-creaso in-creaso of 10.5 per cent over the corresponding corre-sponding week last year. Money .Is plenty, and seeks Investments, instead of eluding the chase of the borrower who has good security. Building in the city continues" to show phenomenal activity. The season's record rec-ord will show that In no year of the city's history has there been so much expended for building as during this yenr. In the country at largo, business confidence con-fidence Is Increasing, and industries are reviving, particularly in steel and textile tex-tile productions: building operations are very vigorous for the season, and collections col-lections are more prompt. Trade generally gen-erally shows an Increase over last year, with money remarkably easy. Labor la more generally employed, and distribution distribu-tion is active. Railway earnings show a gain of S.G per cent thus far in November, No-vember, compared with November of last year. Business failures are much below the average. Bank clearances for the week show In New York City the phenomenal increase in-crease of 79.S, compared with the clearances clear-ances for the same week last year: outside New York the banks gained 17.2 per cent, a gain for all of 53.5 per cent! an increase that is phenomenal indeed. The favorable result of the Presidential election accounts for most of the sudden sud-den upleap In active transactions. The New York bank statement, Issued yesterday, yes-terday, was one of the most favorable ever shown. Tho strength of the business situation Is altogether beyond ordinary; trading is at high mark, and the Industrial and general financial situation hold out every needed promise for a renewed period of marvelous business prosperity. |
