Show Shot Mi k Auto by Bank Robbers Ono Explanation of Mysterious Death of Chauffeur Whose Corpse Is Found in Machine. - CHICAGO, Nov. 10. Shot dead in an automobile by bank robbers, whose plot the victim of the tragedy had discovered, dis-covered, and whose plans he had frustrated, frus-trated, is one explanation of the mysterious mys-terious death of William Bate, a chauffeur, chauf-feur, whose corpse and machine wero found on a lonely roadside today. This theory was advanced by Bate's employer, em-ployer, after an investigation of the circumstances. The Idea is that the mon who hired the automobile were bank robbers and contemplated a raid on some bank In some smnll town. Investigation at the Auditorium today to-day developed the fact that a man giving giv-ing the name of "Dobbs" appeared at the hotel last evening and had asked Edward Slavln, the hotel telephone operator, op-erator, to have Daniel Canary send an automobile for two to the Auditorium entrance at once. Did Not Commit Suicide. That Bate did not commit suicide, "but was shot down by an assassin Is Indicated by the finding of an empty cartridge shell today In the tonneau of the automobile. William Bnte, the dead chauffeur, had been connected with the Canary company for several years and was well known as a fast driver. Might Have Been Love Affair. Two letters found In the possession of the dead man offered a suggestion that Bate's death might havo been the result of a love affair. This theory, however, is not regarded seriously by the police. One of the letters read: "Dear Bate: I understand that you have won the love of Bertha and I presume that you have no further use for me. I hope that your future love will be successful. Of course, It Is pretty hard on me, but I will let tho matter drop and say no more. With love, ROSE L." Mado More Puzzling-. The circumstances surrounding the death of Bate were made more puzzling puz-zling tonight by the report that a woman wo-man was In the automobile a short time before Bate is believed to have been killed. Suspects Are Arrested. The police tonight arrested three men and although none of them answers tho dlscrlptlon of Dove, It Is hoped to gain some Information from them. Two of the arrested men are colored. It is known that all three wero in Tremont Friday night. |
