Show The call which Secretary Shaw has made upon the bank depositories of public funds, to pay into the Treasury one-fourth of such deposits, comes as no surprise to any one. The call has been foreshadowed for months; in fact, it was practically announced at the time the call was made for the thirty millions to meet the Panama canal payment. The call will still leave some seventy-five millions of the public money on deposit, and will bo met without the least financial disturbance. - i Japan's area is 161,210 square miles. The State that is nearest to this in size is California, with 15S.3C0 square miles. Japan has a population (census of 1S9S) of 46,427,GG4; California has a populntlon (census of 1900) of 1,485,053. So there is plenty of chance for California to grow, as no "native son" could for a moment admit that Japan, Is capable of supporting a greater population per square mile than is California. |
