The "A" class members will continue to ride In the professional class while those designated as the "B" class will be permitted to ride with the amateurs. To an outsider this movement looks like nothing more than a brazen effort on the part of several of the dead ones In the professional ranks to comer the amateur prize money. The professionals profession-als who are urging the re-classiflca-tlon are too slow to get hold of much of the professional money, so they are now trying to steal from the younger and less experienced riders. The movement should be squelched. The riders who are now urging the change should be compelled to remain in the professional class. If they caji't ride fast enough to get in the money occasionally let them quit the cycle game and go to work. The purpose of having an amateur racing class Is to develop new riders. If the professionals profession-als are turned back into the amateur class the younger riders are crowded out and they have no chance to win enough prize money to pay for punctures. punc-tures. All of the riders who are now pleading plead-ing for the re-classlficatlon have served their time with the amateurs and were graduated from that class because they were too speedy. Is it fair to the younger riders to permit these men to ride as amateurs again? ti Trouble seems to be brewing in the Pacific National league. Ever since the attempted mobbing of Umpire Jones In this city some weeks ago divers threats have been going around concerning the awful punishment that would be Inflicted In-flicted upon the Salt Lake club on account ac-count of the affair. Some said the franchise would be taken away, others said a $300 fine was in order, but It turns out that none of them, are right. The latest current rumor Is to the effect that President Lucas will lose his official head at the close of the season, if not before. The strong feeling against Lucas in this city is the outgrowth of his position posi-tion in the Jones affair. Lucas was probably misinformed as to the real condition of affairs here and made sev- eral statements to the Spokane press that roused the Ire of the baseball patrons In Salt Lake. Umpire Jones reported that the management man-agement of the Salt Lake club Incited the riot and that several of the Salt Lake players urged the crowd to action. ac-tion. This is untrue. Tho crowd went after Jones, not because they were requested re-quested to do so by any person or persons, per-sons, but because they were Infuriated by his miserable work with the Indicator. Indi-cator. Lucas was right In protecting Jones, but had the P. N. president been a little lit-tle more careful in giving interviews he would be much more popular in Salt Lake than he Is at present. There has been a systematic effort to knock Lucas in this city for Borne time past, but the hammer artists would probably have accomplished nothing but for Lucas's recent attitude toward the local club.. As It is many of '.he fans in this city look upon Lucas as an enemy of the Salt Lake club and believe that he Is in league with Mo-Closkey, Mo-Closkey, a belief that Is not warranted by facts. Motorcyclists to Meet. The Federation of American Motorcyclists Motor-cyclists has accepted the invitation to hold its annual meet at Cambridge, Maryland, on July 8 and 9, and has planned an ambitious programme for those two days and the several preceding. pre-ceding. The annual motor bicycle endurance en-durance contest will leave New York on July C and will finish in Cambridge the following evening, the route being by Philadelphia, Pa., and Wilmington, Dover and Seaford, Delaware. The competitors com-petitors in the contest will be preceded twelve hours by a touring section, thus forming an almost continuous three days procession of motorcycles between the metropolis and the attractive little Maryland city, which is located on the Chesapeake Bay and in the center of a network of magnificent shell roads. |
