Show Thousand Victims of Shewn Disaster Of 1500 Who Embarked on the Excursion, Ex-cursion, Only 236 Escaped Without Injury. NEW YORK. Juno 25. That more than 1000 persons perished in the burning of the excursion steamer Gen. Slocum Ir now practically certain. According to an exhaustive report re-port made by Police Inspector Schmltt-berger Schmltt-berger on the number of dead, missing, I injured and uninjured in the dlaantcr, it appears that 93S bodies have been recovered re-covered and that ninety-three persons absolutely known to have been on board, the vessel are still unaccounted for. bringing the total mortality of the disaster up to 1031. Those injured numbered num-bered 170, and of the throng of fully 1500 who embarked on the excursion of St. Mark's church but 236 escaped without with-out Injury. The report is the result of a mlnuto inquiry made by a corps of 100 patrolmen under the direction of tho Inunoolnr In tho couree of the inquiry much valuable Information was secured from eurvlvors which will be used In the investigation in-vestigation by the District Attorney to fix the responsibility for the disaster A thorough examination today of the hull of the Slocum by Coroners O'Gor-man O'Gor-man and Berry and Inspector Albertson resulted In tho discovery in the locker In which the fire started of a number of barrels which contained kerosene and lubricating oil. The Coroner's Inquest In-quest will be continued on Tuesday and on Thursday the hearing by the Federal grand Jury will be opened. In the death today at Watchung, N. J., of Rev. Dr. Edward Frederick Mol-denke. Mol-denke. one of the best known Lutheran clergymen In the United States, another name was added to the list of victims of the Slocum disaster. Dr. Moldenke was pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran church in this city. Grief for twenty members of his Mock. who went on the excursion and never returned, and his compassion for the bereft families or SL Mark's church so affected him that he became 111. For years he had suffered suf-fered from heart disease and last Sunday Sun-day he broke down while holding a memorial me-morial service for the Slocum dead. Ho was taken to his country home where death occurred. Dr. Moldenke was president general of the council of tho Lutheran church of America from 1895 to ISOfl. He was born In Prussia August 10, 1836. |
