Show Red Men Engage in Sacred Dance Coppor-Colored People Gather at the Hump to Observe an Anniversary. An-niversary. BUTTE, Mont., Juno 25. Delegations from Flathead, Snake, Chlppewas, Blackfeet and Lemhi tribes of Indians In-dians are in attendance at the "Sacred" "Sa-cred" dance given this year by the Cries at the Hump, about fourteen miles west of Butte. Each year one of the tribes of Northwest North-west officiates at the conclave of the Indians which ia considered by the redskins to be the greatest period in the year. The dance lasts for two days, continuing day and night, and Is for the purpose of perpetuating In the minds of the young warriors the heroic deeds of their forefathers. The beating of the tom-toms and weird tooting of whistles of the Indians can bo heard for miles about the Hump. As many as fifty Indians en-gago en-gago In the dance ati one timer, continuing con-tinuing until they drop exhausted. Other Indians stand ready to take the places of the warriors w;ho drop. |
