It is further statci khat the event excited such intense dis gust in San Francisco, that Lawlor wa: discharged from his position in Mac euire's opera house and compelled tt fly from tho city. Mr. Lawio: whet interrogated as to the matter yesterday, expressed tho utmost astonishujeni that his name should have been used in connection therewith. He state-that state-that he was not in the State of California Califor-nia at the timo, but was playing an en gagement in Virginia city, Nevada. He was not married to Miss Mansfield at the time, but believing ihat she had been made the innocent tool of War ren in the disgraceful affair, he shortly after made her his wife. Just before leaving San Francisco the last time, so far from having been discharged Mr. Macguirc tendered him the free use of the opera house for a grand complimentary compli-mentary bencliu Mr. Lawlor denounced tho whole story, so far as he is concerned, as a gross and inexcusable lalsehood, and has already through oounscl in this city written to New York to engage eminent legal assistaneo with the view of prosecuting tho $im for libel. |
