| Show CAUGHT THE CROOKS Salt Lake Officers Lively Chase In Summit County LANDED THREE BAD MEN I + SAFECRACKERS A EXCON VICTS I JAIL t Were Rounded Up Near Xamas Would Have Made a Fight If They Could Have Reached Their GunsIke Hunter Arrested For Shielding Outlaws I t Walt till I get out of this and Ill take a shot at you Ill put a hole through you the first chance I get said Tom Hurley safe cracksman and crcman exconvict to Deputy Sheriff Sam Dowse when In custody yesterday But Hurley is in the county Jail along with his pals Jack Shepard another an-other safe man and exconvict and Hank Riddle who served a term In the county Jail for stealing a saddle Witt them was captured a kit of burg lars tools and safe cracksmens drills These men especially Hurley are what Is popularly known as bad men They have records known to sheriffs and police departments Sheriff 3owells takes pride In their capture for he and som oT his d p I some o s deputies have been on a chase for them almost night and day since last Saturday morning They were taken at Ike Hunters ranch some miles out of Park City Tuesday morning by Deputies Dowse and Ben Harris There are against them two charges of burglary and they are suspected of three other burglaries In fact It is believed by the deputy sheriffs that heee fellows have carried on their bold > operations between Salt Lake and Park City and the surrounding country coun-try for several weeks The belief Is that they have stolen cattle about Park City and brought i to Salt Lake where It was sold Then while here they would com mie burglaries and drive back to Park City and cache the plunder I plun-der at or near Ike Hunters ranch People living along Parleys canyon I road to Park City have seen them I drIvIng back and forward several times Sheriff Howells deputies undertook to I find them on a telephone fnd the message re elved from Sheriff Lindsey at Park I City He wanted them for stealing a beef from McPolands slaughter house The robbers not finding a beef dressed had driven one In from the yard on yar Friday night killed it and came to Salt Lake with it where sold Sat Lke wih f they it to the Salt Lake market Deputies Dowse and Harris finding trace of I the in the southwestern end of town followed the trail up Parleys canyon and on to Park City Located at Kamas They located their men at Kama fifteen miles northeast of Park City on Monday night There it was learned they had been drinking with Ike Hunter I Hun-ter a rancher and several others and they also learned that the men had robbed a sheep camp of a rifle two suits of clothes and other goods Re I turning to Park City the Salt Lake depute were joined by Deputy Witt of Wasatch county exSheriff Cupit I antI Dick Wright one of Torreys roughriders Tuesday the party reached Hunters ranch Witt Cupit and Wright going on ahead and being thrown off the scent by Hunter They proceeded up the canyon and a few minutes later Deputies Dowse and Harris drove up to the ranch Hunter first claimed that the culprits were not there but when flatly told he was lying professed they were In the barn and started with the officers to the supposed hiding place Dowse suspecting some crooked I work glanced backward and saw Hur ley running toward the thick underbrush under-brush having apparently left tne house The deputy called upon Harley to halt which he did Harris meanwhile mean-while had dashed around the house and caught Shepard and Riddle The three trouble were handcuffed without further troubleWhat What Might Have Happened I we could have reached our guns you fellows would never have taken us was Hurleys first remark Dont you ever chose me again like that for if Id had a gun I would have dropped you youHunter Hunter was arrested for shielding the outlaws and the four were sent to Park City In charge of Witt Cupit and Wright Hunters place was searched and under his kitchen step were found an almost complete set of skeleton keys and three new drills used in cracking safes At Kamas that night somi gloves and other things which had been stolen from Salt Lake stores were found Hunter was released on the authority author-ity of County Attorney Callls who came up from Coalville Deputy Dowse is surprised at the attorneys action believing that he has a clear case against Hunter for harboring criminals crim-inals |
