| Show TALK OF THE CANAL Commission Is Preparing to Go to the Isthmus Washington June 15The canal commission spent several hours today in general discussion and an interchange inter-change of views between individual members on various phases of the project pro-ject The probable inability of the commission to accomplish its work and draft its report in time to submit to congress the coming winter was referred re-ferred to and the opinion expressed that the commission cannot dispose of the preliminary portion of its work I make the careful detailed examinations in the field and return here and place the results of the investigation with the accruing recommendations in Intelligible In-telligible shape before the session of congress beginning a year from next December Two reports will be carefully examined exam-ined in all probability before the commission I com-mission starts for the Isthmus These are the reports of the last Nicaragua canal commission which unfortunately is not yet in print necessitating the laborious task of Individual examination examina-tion of the manuscript notes and maps and the report of the French commission commis-sion that had to do with the Investi gation of the Panama route Other data will be secured from various sources At tomorrows meeting the question of appointing a secretary and disburs ing officer will probably be passed upon Cater on appointments will be made of chief engineer and a large corps of engineers to work in parties on various routes The last two or three American commissions have devoted their attention exclusively to the Nicaraguan Nic-araguan canal so that the scope of the present commission will necessarily involve a large amount of work hitherto hither-to untouched bv our Investigations Parties of engineers will be put at work on different routes not already pronounced Impracticable and even an exception to this possibility may be made The commissions session today developed de-veloped no definite understanding as to when it would start for the isthmus i that being deferred for the present I is thought hOver that there will not be a delay of more than a few weeks before the actual work of the invest gation is begun |
