Show Local Footballers Heading To College Activities lent and promise to receive the offer. Word from Provo is that they only have one tightend returning re-turning and the spot is wide open for anyone to win. The third player was probably prob-ably the most recruited, at least in numbers, with Kevin Nitzel choosing Utah State to play his college ball. Kevin was the quarterback for Woods Cross for three seasons and ever since he started as a sophomore, college scouts were looking at him. At 6'5" the Aggies believe they found the passer of their future in Kevin and they have high hopes for him. NORM PARRISH of View-mont View-mont received a football offer from Weber State but decided to accept a basketball offer at Ricks instead, while Bounti-ful's Bounti-ful's Alan Meldrum turned down the U of U offer with the intention of going on a mission. By DAVE YYIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - It might seem a little early to some folks but for those athletes heading to college to play football the ordeal may have already begun. be-gun. College players report to camp in about one month, but most of them have begun the summer workouts that their respective re-spective universities and colleges col-leges have sent them. THIS PAST year was a banner ban-ner year for the three high schools here in the Bountiful area. For one thing it marked the first time in recent memory that at least one player from each of the three schools received re-ceived a scholarship to a major university or college. In past years, many of our local lads went on to junior college col-lege ball, and many will again this fall, but not often do they head right to the four year schools. Several Layton players play-ers have finished at junior college col-lege and have gone on to the four year places but few go directly to the big times. Several other top players will still be playing football this fall on the junior college level. Paul Waite of Bountiful reports re-ports that Carl Wilkes, their fine linebacker, will be wearing wear-ing the blue of Snow College. Also Matt Dalton and Rob Allred will be enrolling at Southern Utah State which is a four year school fighting for recognition in the state. A great place to play, that's where Wade Bender of View-mont View-mont played, the Thunder-birds Thunder-birds also feature several former for-mer Layton players. Matt goes as a lineman, while Rob is a linebacker. COACH BENDER reports that two more of the Vikings were recruited but he wasn't i sure what they would do. j Brent Daines, a fine linebacker, lineback-er, was recruited by Snow, Ricks, and WSC as a walkon. while defensive back Rod Bar- , low was recruited by Southern Utah State. Wally Hawkings reports J that three more of his players ' will suit up again in the fall with fullback Jeff Buxton heading to Dixie and Ronnie Jensen and Steve Eden heading to Eastern Utah. Ronnie is a tackle and Steve will compete in both football and track where he was a standout in the weight events. WITH THIS amount going on to continue playing one can see that some of the best high school football is played right here in the Davis County area. AS MENTIONED, three local loc-al players will be heading to four year campuses, plus another two were made offers but for personal reasons they will not accept. That makes five players in the three schools that scouts feel have big time potential and one has to think the quality of coaching in the area must be high. Heading the list of recruits was first team all-Stater Kyle Morrell of Viewmont. Kyle played both quarterback and defensive back for the Vikes and word from Provo is that they will give him a serious look as a freshman at one of the safety spots on the varsity club. On various talk shows featuring the coaches from BYU, where he has signed,' they have noted two incoming Freshmen they feel could help their first year, one being Kyle. Right now Kyle still plans on playing baseball starting start-ing his sophomore year, they won't let him as a freshman, but even he admits anything could happen by then. ANOTHER GREAT player heading south to the Cougars is Mike Woodbury, the big tight end of Bountiful. Mike caught the attention of the scouts as a junior starter on the Braves state championship team and although he played little due to illness and injury this past season sea-son he still showed enough ta- |
