Show Merit System For Future Jail Workers By MARK D. MICKELSEN FARMINGTON From now on future Davis County jail workers will have to answer to the sheriffs merit council when they want promotions and raises. A PLAN to transfer jail peace officers from the county personnel list onto the sheriffs merit system was unanimously approved Tuesday by the county commission. commis-sion. Workers will take on no new benefits, but there will be better job protection, Sheriff Brant Johnson said. THE SHERIFF told commissioners that under state law, peace officers must be included in-cluded in the merit system. Previously, all jail workers fell under county personnel categories and were included in exisiting benefit and salary plans. As a result of the change, peace officers will have an opportunity to take any em ployment grievances to the sheriffs merit council. And in return, councilmembers will determine merit raises and promotions. promo-tions. THE COUNTY commission asked Sheriff Sher-iff Johnson to elaborate on the differences between county-sponsored and merit-sponsored merit-sponsored retirement programs, but the sheriff said he would rather not address the change at this time. Five acting jail workers will be included in the changeover, he said, but noted that the biggest number of people affected by the change will be newly-hired employees. IN OTHER jail business, Johnson said construction on the top floor of the new facility is nearing completion. Com. Ernest Eberhard said rooms in the upper level should be ready for occupancy by Aug. 1. Completion of the second floor marks the end of the year-long jail construction project. wmjynimi" iw" --ipinMifiMn- "ff |
