Show Former Resident Receives Award Afton B. Smith, a native of Bountiful and graduate of Davis High School, is a grant recipient in the nationwide Elder Scholar of the Year competition. com-petition. She received a bachelors bache-lors degree at B YU in 1945 and her husband, Richard Smith, is dean of the College of Business at USU. THE AWARD was presented pre-sented by Colonial Penn Group, Philadelphia, that invited in-vited colleges and universities across the U.S. to nominate a student age 50 or older. Colonial Penn presented Mrs. Smith a check for $500 for "demonstrating through her personal accomplishments and academic record, the tremendous contributions made by older students who exemplify the philosophy that learning is a lifelong process." MRS. SMITH, who received re-ceived a master of fine arts degree de-gree from USU June 4, was chosen by a national selection board, for "academic excellence, excell-ence, personal achievement, extraordinary motivation, potential for contribution to society and her capacity to act as a role model of prospective older students." Mrs. Smith said she returned re-turned to school "to complete a dream of 35 years to be capable cap-able of self-expression in a meaningful way in art," She was one of 17 over-age-50reci-pients nationwide. Over 70 schools nominated students to take part in the competition. |
