Show Infant Car Seats To Be Available By TOM BL'SSELBERG FARMINGTON Citing a desire to help reduce infant-age infant-age automobile accidents and educate parents to the need for safety measures, the Davis County Health Dept. is gearing to begin loaning infant car seats. THE DEPARTMENT'S board gave approval to the program that will be implemented im-plemented next month when 175 car seats will be available to parents of youngsters until the baby reaches a weight of 20 lbs. Valued at about $40 each, a "rental" fee and deposit will be asked with the amount to be determined by the next health board meeting Aug. 4, Health Director Enrico Leopardi said. THEY WILL be offered by the department in Farmington on a first come, first serve basis regardless of income with the hope that although enough won't be available for all county residents based on an average of 210 births a month a rippling effect will promote expanded car seat use, he continued. Currently, the Bear River health agency and a U. of U. health program are conducting similar program. "WE HOPE it will help stimulate sti-mulate the use of seats for tots, and for the stage between tots and older children and get adults and all ages to use seat-belts," seat-belts," Dr. Leopardi empha-. empha-. sized. Health educator Allen Parker Par-ker said use of a car seat should increase the safety factor tremendously, noting a 300 pound impact would result for a 30 pound baby being held by its mother involved in a ten mile-per-hour accident. IN OTHER business, a "Davis Health Styles" program, prog-ram, aimed at making people aware of areas in their lile-style lile-style that should be changed to maximie life expectancy, will run from Aug. I -Dec. 31. Typically, groups of ten. including in-cluding residents and those working in the county, can be involved in an initial health profile, where blood pressure is taken and the individual completes a form indicating any use of alcohol, tobacco, etc., amount of exercise and other habits. During that session, any problem areas can be outlined, including what steps can be implemented im-plemented to improve life chances, such as whether a physician should he contacted. |
