Show Emigration Of Soviets Is Slowed It's now crystal clear that the U.S. Senate's attempt, aggressively pushed by Senator Sena-tor Henry Jackson (D-Wash), to force the Soviet Union to allow more Soviet Jews to emigrate to Israel, backfired on both Americans and Russian Rus-sian Jews. SINCE that attempt, as Secretary of State Henry Kissinger Kis-singer has pointed out, Soviet Jewish emigration has slowed to a trickle. Because the Russians resented this attempt by the U.S. Congress to dictate policy on a domestic Russian issue, they also rejected a massive trade pact which had been worked out between the two countries. Estimates are that the cancellation has cost the U.S. at least two billions in trade. THE U.S. attempt to dictate emigration policy in Russia has cost many their chance to emigrate; about 30,000 Russian Rus-sian Jews were being granted emigration visas two years ago but in the past five or six months not a single prominent application has been granted an exit visa. Politicians seeking votes and contribmions of American Jews do the nation a disservice with politicking that intrudes into foreign policy. |
