Show jKtara fflol Tptt Lofls , An underlying distrust of "government" surfaced in the Bountiful City Council meeting Wednesday, despite repeated assurances from city officials to Meadow Lane Subdivision residents present. THE COUNCIL committed itself last week to build a tot lot adjacent to the expanding water department building at 245 W. 1050 S., and this week appointed four of the approximately 40 attending Meadow Lane Subdivision residents to advise Jon Reed Booth, planning director, of their suggestions for its development. The council also asked for a study from Jack Balling, city engineer, to determine whether two extra equipment storage bays which are planned as additions to the water building could perhaps go as an addition to the streets department building in the city complex. DESPITE these council actions, Dila Peterson, whose ,., backyard is adjacent to the water building property, said cf she thought the city was just "pulling the wool over our : eyes and really just plan to take over the whole area." j Most of the dialogue between the Meadow Lane residents and the council was interspersed with compliments about the conduct of the other side. SEYMOUR Winter, a spokesman for the residents, thanked the council for its cooperation and for the help of Grant Petersen, city manager, in making maps and documents available to the group. The council commended com-mended the group on its well-thought out presentation j and its manner of approaching the council. The lack of total assurance of the residents was the result of two unchangeable situations. FIRST, the tot lot was promised in 1962 when the water building was first erected. The plan never became a reality, for reasons not clearly recorded in the city council's minutes. GRANT PETERSEN said at the last city council meeting that it was his recollection that residents were worried about a tot lot so close to the big trucks and heavy equipment of the water department, and that the measure was tabled for those reasons. The second source for the residents' insecurity was the fact that the council cannot unequivocally commit future city councils to uphold present land use and zoning decisions. THE MEADOW Lane residents were worried not only about the possibility of future expansion of the water building, but also about encroachment of commercial zoning in their residential area. "We're worried that if this (commercial development) continues any farther, we won't be able to maintain property values in the area," said Winter. "AS WE LOOK into the future, we can see where it will be more and more of a problem. We'd hate to think that ten years from now we'll be living in an undesirable neighborhood. The committee named to work with Jon Reed Booth on the park development included Tom Wall, Verlin Gardiner, Gar-diner, Charlotte Grundy and Larry Anderson. |
