Show Vikings Travel To Falcon Tilt By DAVE WIGHAM This week's Clearfield and Viewmont battle is a game that some of the Clearfield players have been looking forward for-ward to for about a year now. It seems that last year as a junior varsity club the Falcons didn't lose too many games, but two of their loses came to the Vikes. Revenge is definitely on their minds this week when the two collide. GAME time is Thursday at 7: 30 in the Falcon gym. If you go on last week's scores alone then the Clearfield Clear-field club would have to be considered heavy favorites. But somehow the Vikes don't look or play like underdogs. Actually these two clubs match up, size wise at least, almost evenly. CONSIDER that both clubs have one small and one tall guard, the Falcons have Darren Parry and Kelly Parsons Par-sons while the Vikes have John Higley and Kevin Hess. Both clubs have good size, although no real giants on either side, up front. Clearfield Clear-field goes with Brian Johnson, Scott Wallace and Russell Florence, while Viewmont will counter with Cory Hanks, Mike Yates and Cal Curtis. MANY observers will say that the Clearfield team will walk away with this contest, but then you have to consider that the Vike team won twice last year. One difference between this year and last though for the Falcons is the play of Brian Johnson. Last season Brian sat out because of his knee but his play this year has pleased the coaches, "I'm really pleased with the progress of Brian, he's playing better now than I thought he would." Last week Brian tallied 15 points for Clearfield and played a fine defensive ball game. THE KEY matchup, if there is such in this game, could be between the two playmakers : Viewmont's John Higley and Clearfield's Darren Parry. Higley is the taller, he's about 6' 1" compared to Parry's 5' 9" but Parry has the experience having played a lot last season while Higley was strictly a JV player. Higley has been known to drive and with his height advantage he could go inside a lot this Thursday. VIEWMONT will also have a little height advantage up front, due to the fact that Johnson is only about 6'1", while the three Viking front couriers all go around 63". But size doesn't seem to concern the Falcons as they have outrebounded many teams taller than them. They play extremely tough defense which will cause some problems for the Vikes. BOTH clubs are well established es-tablished as powers in the area, and they both like the team play concept. Clearfield will have to take the middle away from Viking Cory Hanks, who had a good day last week, and the driving lanes away from the Viewmont guards. Hess is an extremely accurate ac-curate outside shooter. Viewmont, View-mont, on the other hand, will have to be careful with the ball with the pressure defense that the Falcons operate with. CLEARFIELD can be very intimidating, especially at their own place, and have the capability of blowing people . out of ball games. Viewmont will have to keep their composure com-posure if they hope to stay with the Falcons and win. Up at Clearfield one would have to favor the Falcons, but this Viewmont club is capable of anything. |
