Show i IGSGF3 PFOPQPO fcpDonnouiilQ 1 By DAVE WIGHAM 'A Both Layton and Bonneville If will be trying to shrug off first game losses when the two square off this Thursday Jf'i at Lancer gym for round two t of Region One basketball V wars. Game time is 7:30 p.m. J in Lancerville. THE MAIN difference in V, ast week's losses were the Bonneville team dropped a game at home while the Lancers were on the road. In Oils league a loss at home is twice as bad as one on the 3 f : road. You're supposed to lose ' i on foreign ground in this i ! balanced league, but you're '. i also supposed to win on the '0 !' home floor to stay alive, "x- Another difference was the """ way in which they lost. True a win is a win and a loss is a loss. Layton was in the game most of the time before bowing bow-ing to Roy, while the Bonneville team was Si dominated by Clearfield, the Lakers were never really in the game. jj TO LOOK at pre-season 0 records one would like to . favor the Bonneville crew, but when you look at the op-if, op-if, ponents you begin to wonder just how strong this Laker v: club is. While Layton was dropping games to the likes of East and West, the Bonneville club was beating Ogden. They had a hard time downing .. Woods Cross, which by the way is a very good club. The point is anyone can have an impressive preseason if they " want to schedule one. The Lancers had a much rougher schedule to play. The main question at Lay-ton Lay-ton this past week is what happened to the guardline last week. Going into the season one of the Lancer strong points was supposed to '! be their guards, yet last week the bulk of the scoring came J ! from up front with Rory i Dixon and Brandon Flint get- ting scoring honors. Ben Bubak added 11 points to the cause but thev need more scoring from the backcourt. In their loss last week the Lancers seemed to fall asleep in the third period as they only managed to put ten points up on the board. THE LANCERS have some great talent in their corner Dixon and Flint are as good forwards as you'll find. Flint is the power-type player that likes to mix it up, while Dixon will surprise many folks with his jumping ability. Both offer their own thing in the club and both are vital to their success. The guardline is one of the best with Bubak, Carl Woodward Wood-ward and Rick Snow all seeing see-ing action. Woodward is a great outside shooter who came into his own last year when clubs sagged in the middle. Bubak and Snow are quick and like to penetrate, so the Layton clubs offer a little bit of everything from the guardline. The Lakers will have a tough decision to make. If they play a zone the guards will pop from the outside, out-side, and if they go man then the Lancers go inside. COACH MOON has faced a problem that is becoming common to him, trying to mold a football team into a basketball outfit. It takes time. The Lancers have a lot of football players on the basketball team and it takes a while for them to iron out the bugs. As the season has progressed so has the team, if they can stay close for a couple of weeks they'll be tough down the stretch. Bonneville had problems doing anything against the Clearfield bunch. They'll find the Lancers no easier. Layton has everything going for them. They're hungry for a win. It's at Layton. They have superior talent. Look for a Lancer win. |
