Show Elks Announce Student Contest The Utah Elks Association on behalf of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and Elks Lodge No. 2442 of Bountiful, Utah announces the 1978-79 "Most Valuable Student" contest. THE FUNDS in this contest are derived from the Elks National Foundation trust fund. This trust fund was established es-tablished in 1928 by a $100,000 gift to the National Foundation. Founda-tion. Since then, largely through donations by Elks members, the fund has grown to 32 million dollars. This year, the Elks will distribute $808,000.00 in scholarships nationally, the largest amount ever. Utah, in 1978-79 will receive a minimum of $7100 in scholarships from this fund. THIS AMOUNT could be far greater because of the competitive nature of the contest. In addition, the Utah Elks Association will award an additional $4000 in scholarships within the State. Each Lodge in the State I generally awards lesser amounts to winners who have participated from high schools within its area of jurisdiction. Contest application forms have been distributed to high school counselors in early December. The completed applications must be returned to the youth activities chairman chair-man or secretary of the appropriate Elks Lodge no later than Feb. 10. THE CONTEST is open to high school seniors of high academic ability, active in school and extra-curricular affairs. Financial need is also taken into account. A total of 1100 scholarships, ranging from $600 to $3000, will be awarded by the National Na-tional Foundation alone. An untold number will additionally addi-tionally be awarded by State Associations and Lodges across the Nation. CONTEST judging will be completed in Utah by March 12, 1978 and nationally by May L 1978. High school seniors wishing to participate should contact their counselors in early December or contact any nearby Elks Lodge. |
