Show HasEieafl Sn Pauls SSiould He EiiGitino By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - It will take a pretty fair effort to top the style and caliber of play that basketball fans around the county were used to seeing last season but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic op-timistic about the season this year. A YEAR ago we had a couple of new coaches in the ranks, they are now second year veterans of high school wars. This season we have two brand new gymnasiums to watch in as both Bountiful and Clearfield will play in new surroundings. Layton pulled off their highest state finish ever as the Lancers claimed fourth place. Bountiful got into a playoff situation for the first time in several years. Woods Cross went through the tough region action with a perfect record. Viewmont thrilled fans with more Winston the road than at home. Davis made another run at a region crown and made their annual trip to the state event. Then too the Falcons were a well drilled club who gave everyone a fight for their lives. GONE ARE the names like Gordon Andersen, Scott Wallace, Blaine Bernard, Jim Miller, Mike Mounteer and Mark McCleery. Yet each team has some top talent returning. re-turning. At the Wildcat camp the Woods Cross people are looking for big things from senior Mark Earnshaw who has been a mainstay in that program since his sophomore season. Mark will be counted on heavily for scoring this season. BOUNTIFUL returns guard Jeff Bradford who is one of the best shooters in the area and will need to put points on the board for Coach Mike Hall and company. Viewmont looks to senior forward Paul Hansen for their leadership and scoring. Paul has been on the varsity club for three years and gives the Vikes some experience. DAVIS WILL figure on a good season from senior Jeff Emery who also played a lot as a sophomore and started as a junior. A good shooter Jeff can play either forward or guard. Layton will rely on another one of the Lee brothers, this one senior forward Dunn. A good shooter who can jump with anyone, Dunn is the nearest thing to experience that Coach Doug Moon has returning. CLEARFIELD lost their main stringers to graduation but they have a couple of good looking guards in Greg Boar-den Boar-den and Brook Hicks. Both will see plenty of action for Coach Hansen. In the next few weeks we'll take a closer look at all the clubs in the area when the coaches pick just which teams will be the strongest in the league. |
