Show Dixie College Uses Many Local Players By DAVE WIGHAM ST. GEORGE - For several years now this paper has noted what a recruiting area the County has become for football coaches around the state. NOW WE have some facts to indicate this fact. Just take the case of the Dixie College football program. The only place that has more Davis County football players on is the high school teams in the county. As soon as their high school careers are over the Rebels stand right in line to recruit these great athletes. Lee Bunnell, the coach of the Rebel football fortunes sums it up this way. "I didn't realize how many outstanding ball players we have from Davis County. "In fact we have eighteen players on the club from Davis County and 12 of them are starters." BUNNELL PRAISED the quality of fundamental football foot-ball skill, demonstrated by the former area players, and alluded to the fact that almost all of them came to Dixie "with an obvious advantage -due to excellent coaching fundamentals." Another reason the Rebel coach likes to recruit in the Davis area is because of the coaches' honesty. 'The coaches in Davis have been really great to me and I know their recommendations for college talent are honest." JUST THIS past week the Rebels won their conference football crown with their win over Snow College. Ben Bubak of Layton High is the starting quarterback for the Dixie club and Keith Malnar of Davis is the starting start-ing fullback. These two seek help from an offensive line that features three former Bountiful players, Dean Lay-ton, Lay-ton, Steve Rudd and Ron Hammer. STEVE KITTRELL from Layton is a starting linebacker on the club as was Brian Wick of the Lancers until put out of action with an ankle injury. Mike Muir of Clearfield now starts at the backer slot. Clearfield is represented on the defense by big Bob Berrera who his coaches call "the finest in the conference". Three former Davis players also see playing time on the defense, Todd Taylor, Thor Angle and Kevin Criddle. OTHER AREA players seeing see-ing action include Curtis Green, Clark Poulson and Mike Lovelace of Layton, Mike Mounteer and Craig Smith of Davis and Doug Littlefield of Layton. Coach Bunnell is looking forward to another banner recruiting year and points out that these former players are his best tool. "Our ballplayers come home during dur-ing Christmas and tell all their friends about the merits of Dixie and all I have to do is follow up." |
