Show Marines Set Up Back In Nov. 1775 Throughout the history of the United States the flag and defense of the nation have been superbly served by the U.S. Marine Corps. The Corps dates from Nov. 10, 1775. ON THIS day the Continental Continen-tal Congress in Philadelphia authorized formation of two battalions to aid in the war against England. There has been companies of marines in America, but under British command, and the two battalions were the first American marine units. THE FIRST captain commissioned com-missioned was Samuel Nickolas. He opened recruiting recruit-ing headquarters in the Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, since considered the birthplace of the U.S. Marines. |
