Uinvah vo hosv ; earns from four svaves in iourney The Uintah Utes will host the 9th Annual Vernal Tournament of Champions Friday and Saturday in Vernal. Teams from Vernal, Preston, Idaho; Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Rock Springs, Wyo.; Mountain View and Pleasant Grove will compete in the meet. The tournament will consist of six varsity teams, Uintah's junior varsity team and junior varsity wrestlers from the five other teams. The first round will begin Friday at 1 p.m. and the semi-finals will start at 7:30 p.m. Matches on Saturday will begin at 1 p.m. and the consolation finals will begin at 6 p.m. The championship cham-pionship finals are set for 7:30 p.m., Saturday. "Uintah, Pleasant Grove and Mountain View should be the top three teams in the tourney. Steamboat Springs will be right up there. They have a good tournament team. Preston will have some good individual wrestlers. Rock Springs is young, but they have a good team that will do well in the tournament," remarked Uintah wrestling coach Chuck Henry. Varsity starters for the Uintah Utes in the tournament will be: 98-Jerry Tingey, 105-Brent Morrill or Mark Augustus, 112-Keith Campbell, 119-David 119-David Gentry, 126-Jeff Good, 132-Kent Boren, 138-Torr McCurdy, 145-Darrin Bailey, 155-Randy Smuin, 167-Pat Jenkins, 185-Jody Young and heavyweight-David Weeks. Uintah junior varsity starters will be: 98-Chris Smith, 105-Augustus or Morrill, 112-Leslie Gorman, 119-Wilbert Woody, 126-Seyrnore Bedonie or Kary McNeill, 132-Brad Dickson, 138-Bucky Tingey, 145-Jamie Evans, 155-Jerry Haslem, 167-Scott Gardner, 185-Rod Gilmore and heavyweight-Bob Lee. "The Preston coach told me that he has some good wrestlers at 155, 138 and 167 pounds. Pleasant Grove should be strong at 105-Cory Hall, 119-Aaron Sherod, 126-Kelly Sanderson, 132-Gary Ostler, 138-Maxwell, 167-Harvey, 185- Brett Johnson and heavyweight-Dave Reeves. Mountain View's top tusslers are Jess Christen, 126; Kip Christen, 132; Chris Humphries, 138 or 145 and Kline Bradford, 185," said Henry. Mountain View downed Payson recently 39-20. Payson jumped out to a 14-0 lead due to victories at 98, 105, 112 and 119. Jess Christen pinned his 126 opponent with 1 : 18 left in the first round and his broiner Kip also gained a pin. Humphries gave Mountain View an 18-14 18-14 lead when he acquired a pin in the first round. Sam Steele and Riley Prestwich added pins for a 30-14 ad- vantage. Bradford gained a decision and Darren Vaetoe pinned his tussler in 26 seconds. Henry added, "Rock Springs' top tusslers are 98-Mike Moss, 105-Brian Friel, 112-Gonzales, 119-Stoney Searle, 126-Kimball, 132-Egbert, 145-Mark McCulley, 185-Egbert and heavyweight, Pork Jones. Steamboat Springs is strong at 112-Smith, 126-Richey, 126-Richey, 132-Taylor, 138-Wandell, 185-Shane 185-Shane Webb and heavyweight-Rivera. The Uintah Utes have captured first place crowns in four of the past eight tournaments. The Utes ' have placed second, once and third, three times. Montrose has won uie tournament twice and Green River, Rock Springs own one tournament win each. The Utes' Jenkins is a defending champion and Smuin placed second in 1981. Gentry also nabbed second place. Uintah will host Orem in a region contest Thursday, Jan. 14 and will take on Meeker Jan. 15 and Wasatch Jan. 16 on the road. The Utes will face the Bruins at Mountain View Jan. 21 and will host Steamboat Springs Jan. 23 and Green River Jan. 27. The Utes will take on the Vikings at Pleasant Grove Jan. 28. The Utes have a 3-0 region record due to wins over Timpview, Provo and American Fork. Uintah is 4-0 overall.
