Show Oil shale bonus money held up for 'red tape' Utah will have to wait for the federal government to file formal court documents before the state and the U.S. Department of Interior can diwy up $127 million in 10-year-old oil shale bonus bids, court officials said last week. The money will amount to between $48 million and $64 million for Utah. It was released from escrow by a U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling ' that settled a lengthy legal dispute over title to the oil shale lease lands. The money was bid in the early 1970s by a consortium of oil companies. The funds were left in limbo during a dispute between Utah and the federal government over ownership of the land leased. Paul Badger, chief clerk for U.S. District Court for Utah, said the Interior In-terior Department now must submit a formal court order giving the exact amount in the escrow account, which has accrued considerable interest. "The money can't be released to the state until the Interior Department submits the final sum and the court issues a formal order," he said. |
