SAN FRANCISCO THUMPS GIANTS Freddie Solomon scored on a 58 yard touchdown pass and set up a late San Francisco touchdown with a 22 yard punt return as the San Francisco 49ers beat the New York Giants 38-24 in Sunday's National Football Foot-ball Conference semifinal playoff game. The 49ers will host the Dallas Cowboys, Sunday in the NFC championship game. The 49ers, with quarterback quarter-back Joe Montana completing com-pleting several long passes, scored three times in the first 4'i minutes of the second period to take a 24-7 lead over the Giants. Solomon scored in the second period after rookie cornerback Ronnie Lott intercepted a pass by Giant quarterback Scott Brunner. Less than three minutes earlier, the 49ers broke a 7-7 tie when Ray Wersching kicked a 22 yard field goal which was set up by Montana's 39 yard pass to wide receiver Dwight Clark. Ricky Patton ran 25 yards for a San Francisco touchdown, making the score 24-7, after linebacker Keena Turner recovered a fumble by New York's Leon Bright. In the opening minutes of the game, wide receiver Solomon committed com-mitted a clipping penalty to nullify a 64 yard touchdown play and also dropped a potential touchdown pass. But the 49ers scored despite Solomon's troubles on Montana's 8 yard touchdown pass to tight end Charlie Young. New York tied the score late in the opening quarter when Brunner hit Earnest Gray on a 72 yard touchdown pass play. Brunner had three touchdown passes in the game. The young passer fired a 59 yard touchdown strike to Johnny Perkins early in the second half, cutting the San Francisco's Fran-cisco's lead to 24-17, and he hit Perkins on a 17 yarder in the closing minutes after the 49ers had established a safe 38-17 lead. The New York comeback com-eback from the 24-7 deficit began when Joe Danelo kicked a 48 yard field goal in the second quarter. The Giants moved mov-ed the ball from their 29 yard line to the San Francisco Fran-cisco 4. On a third down play, Gray was stripped of the football by Wright at the goal line as he attempted at-tempted to catch a pass from Brunner. Danelo then tried a 21 yard field goal and missed, with the ball hitting the left upright of the goal post. Solomon's 22 yard punt return came early in the fourth quarter, carrying the ball to New York's 36.
