Show TAHITI APPEALS TO FI1T "FLIT SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 4. A wireless wire-less appeal for medical aid to check a serious epidemic of influenza in the So- i clety islands, situated in the South Pacific ocean approximately 3000 miles from San Francisco, was received here tonight by tho Associated Press from its correspondent at Bapeete, capital of Tahiti the principal island of the group. The message said that the entire en-tire populations of Tahiti and Moorea, the next largest islarid, had been stricken by a malignant form of Influenza In-fluenza and that numerous deaths had resulted. The natives of (ho dozen or more other islands of the group also are be- lleved to be similarly affected, the message added. t The supply 'of necessary medicines :is nearly exhausted, the message said. The governor of the islands, which are under French control, appeals officially official-ly to the outside world for help and requests that a fast steamer with doctors doc-tors and medical supplies be sent immediately im-mediately to Bapette from the nearest port. Honolulu is the nearest poulous port from which aid could come. It is 2000 miles distant. Sidney, N. S. W., is about 2500 miles from Bapeete. |
