It has been two weeks since I wrote but haven't had a chance as wo have been at the front for. almost two weeks and are now on our way back for a rest so will write more often. "I was in the first drive the 91st division made and came out without a scratch, so guoss my time hasn't come yet, "I have been In and seen all the horrors of war and it's pretty tough. "Wo advanced under machine gun fire, snipers, shrapnel, and gas, and I dread tho shrapnel most of all for it sometimes blows one all to pieces. "I had the pleasure (?) of spending the night in a small dugout with a dead man sharapnel - having blown the top of his head off and it didn't touch me lying beside him., "The Germans have no infantry to amount to anything but have .hundreds of machine gun nests hidden in the woods and it is very difficult to get thorn. "They can do lots of damage with their artillery as they know all the country and havo the rango of even' cross road where our troops are likely to be moving. "The 91st made, good, having advanced ad-vanced a long way, and held all the ground we took until we were released. re-leased. "Several boys from Utah who came over when I did were killed. "Yesterday I went to Billy's Co. and he is reported missing in action, so don't know what his fate is. "I received a letter from home while we were in the front lino and read it while shells were bursting all around us. "While in the drive we suffered silightly from cold and hunger. We slept where ever night overtook us, in small holes we dug in the ground to protect us from shells but 1 came out without even catching a cold." |
