Show I SYSTEMATIC UNDERMINING OF THE PRESIDENT. That the sole purpose of the attacks on the President of tho United States was to discredit our chief magistrate and lessen his prestige among the diplomats dip-lomats of Europe- is clearly shown in the following special dispatch: PARIS, Dec. I. European papers, pa-pers, especially those in London, having American correspondents, contain quite full accounts of the criticism of the press and divisions divi-sions in American opinion. Their j publics have no occasion to complain com-plain of censorship on American news which thus comes through, and which, while weakening the president's influence in certain quarters, may have the effect of rallying other elements to his support. sup-port. Mr. Wilson has a large and sincere following among tho British Brit-ish masses, and in government circles cir-cles there are many who prize American friendship. It is an ill bird that befouls Its own nest. It is a source of real humiliation j that we, as a people, should allow pet- f ty differences in domestic affairs to discredit the nation in the eyes of the outside world. |
