Phil Olsen said his split-finger fastball could reach a velocity of 90 miles per hour this coming spring. Clipper to sponsor special awards By TOM HARALDSEN A major recognition program for high school athletes will be sponsored spon-sored this school year by both the Davis County Clipper and I and J Engraving of Layton. The program is designed to pro-vide pro-vide the recognition to prep athletes that they deserve, and includes in-cludes individual and school awards. Beginning at the end of September, Septem-ber, the Clipper will name a Male and Female Athlete of the Month. Those athletes selected will be ' from a group of nominees received from coaches and sportwriters. The winners will be honored with a short story and photo published in the Clipper, and in addition will receive re-ceive a personalized plaque from Gus Petersen, owner of J and J En-graving, En-graving, 43 East Gentile, in Layton. The contest will be limited this year to athletes in the three area , high schools Bountiful, Viewmont View-mont and Woods Cross, and will include only those sports competed com-peted in on the high school level. Awards will be given monthly through May, at which time both a -Male and Female Athlete of the . Year will be named. The Clipper, in conjunction with the Davis Reflex-Journal, our sister sis-ter newspaper in northern Davis County, will also hold an All-Sports All-Sports Award this season. Each of the six county schools will be rank- . ed in each sport they participate in. Continued on next page Look for recognition to athletes Continued from previous page The school with the average highest high-est finish as determined through a complex scoring system will be given the All-Sports trophy. We hope this will create some friendly competition between schools, as well as serve as a forum for publicizing our top athletes. Look for our first monthly winners to be announced as soon as the month concludes. |
