Mb ' a CAT'S JODIE WARHURST Athletes of month Viewmont wrestler Shandell Smoot and Woods Cross basketball basket-ball player Jodie Warhurst have been selected as Davis County Clipper Athletes of the Month for January. Both athletes will receive handsomely hand-somely engraved plaques, courtesy cour-tesy of the Clipper and J and J Engraving En-graving and Trophies of Layton. On the mats this season, it's been hard to beat Smoot, who recently re-cently won honors in the Region Four tournament and will be a favorite in state wrestling at Clearfield Clear-field High this weekend. Shandell is praised as a team leader on and off the mats. Others deserving mention for January were divers Dave Gullino of Viewmont and Dave Lassig of Woods Cross, and basketballers Bret Rogers of Woods Cross, John Cahoon and Joey Covey of Bountiful, Bounti-ful, and Jason Burningham and Scott Bland of Viewmont. On the female side of things, Warhurst might have been the key factor to the Wildcat's 7-1 January record. Jodie, one of the famous Wildcat Twin Towers (fellow junior Marci Heaps is the other member), averaged in double figures fi-gures in scoring (12.5) and rebounds re-bounds (10. 1) in January, as well as averaging 1.5 blocks and 2.0 steals per game. Woods Cross is 14-2 on the season. Others deserving recognition include in-clude Woods Cross divers Jina Sinone and Lana Lennberg, Woods Cross swimmer Sara Wilson, Wil-son, and basketballers Heaps, Amy Mason, Jackie Williams and Heather Hobbs from Woods Cross; Julie Stuart and Becky Ye-ates Ye-ates from Viewmont, and Heidi Olsen and Michelle Behl from , Bountiful. The Clipper will honor athletes each month throughout the school year, with a male and female Athlete of the Year award to be given just before graduation in May. |
