Vykelles 'dazzle5 judges to defend their region drill team championship By TOM HARALDSEN WOODS CROSS The Viewmont View-mont High Vykelles, putting on a dazzling display of dance movements, move-ments, defended their Region Four Drill Team championship by capturing cap-turing the title again Tuesday night at Woods Cross High. The Vykelles, under the direction direc-tion of Bonnie Pierce, edged out second place Bountiful in what turned out to be a two-school competition. com-petition. Woods Cross and Davis, the only other schools from region in the competition, were shutout of placements in the program. Bountiful won top honors in the evening's first division, Military, as Jan Whittaker's girls executed a clean, almost error-free performance. perform-ance. Viewmont finished second in that division. Next up was dance, where the Vykelles and Mandonelles from Bountiful staged a very close competition. com-petition. Both teams dazzled a crowded gymnasium with their costumes and routines. The Vykelles Vykel-les got the nod over Bountiful in that division by one point. Perhaps the closest, and most popular competition, came in the Props Division. The Vykelles went first, using their difficult "sa-whorse" "sa-whorse" routine and hitting it to near perfection. Afterwards, Mrs. Pierce was clearly pleased with the Vykelle effort as she congratulated her squad. The Mandonelles followed with their popular trampoline routine. It appeared that this division could have gone to either team, depending depend-ing on how the judges viewed it. Viewmont edged Bountiful by one point in Props. The final division was Novelty, where the host Woods Cross Chatelles put on a delightful routine featuring the cartoon character char-acter Gumby (or is it a toy) as a cowboy. The Chatelles came dressed dres-sed as Gumbys, and were a crowd pleaser. The Vykelles followed with an amusing weightlifters routine, dancing with barbell props and wearing padded "muscle outfits." The Mandonelles also wore padding pad-ding in their humorous swimsuit routine that followed, but not on their arms or legs. Davis also had a clever wooden soldier routine in this division. Viewmont again edged Bountiful by one point, and was named the region champion. Bountiful was second, while unofficially, Davis and Woods Cross tied for third. "It was very much a surprise," Mrs. Pierce said. "The competition competi-tion was really close, and you hate to see one team lose. The girls were pleased with how they did, and were prepared for second place if that's how it had ended, but obviously, ob-viously, we're delighted to win." It seemed like deja vu for the Vykelles and Mandonelles, who staged a similar competition last year. At state, Bountiful came back to edge Viewmont for the title. Both schools will now prepare for the state drill championships on February 21 at Bountiful High. Each team can enter in three divisions. divi-sions. As of Wednesday morning, the Vykelles were leaning towards entering dance, prop and novelty. Mrs. Whittaker said Tuesday night that she had not decided which divisions di-visions the Mandonelles would enter. A highlight of the evening was performances by cheerleaders from Bountiful, Viewmont and Woods Cross, plus a routine from the Woods Cross Flag Team which recently won a duet championship. |
