Show Lady Wildcats clinch playoff berth By TOM HARALDSEN WOODS CROSS The Woods Goss Lady Wildcats, continuing to show an incredibly balanced attack, ensured themselves a state playoff berth by defeating Bountiful Bounti-ful 63-44 in action Tuesday afternoon. after-noon. The Wildcats are now 7-0 in league play, and remain one game ahead of East, which beat Highland High-land to go to 6-1. Bountiful is now 3-4 in league, and in fourth place. The Braves started very well, as Lisa Wilkinson scored four points early to help Bountiful toa9-61ead. But Woods Cross ran off nine straight points, six by Amy Mason and three by Marci Heaps, to take a 15-9 lead. The Cats never trailed again. Bountiful hung tough, as Michelle Michel-le Behl began hitting a short turnaround turn-around jumper in the key to keep things close. But senior Heidi Olsen got into early foul trouble, going to the bench with her third personal midway through the first quarter. Fouls would plague the Braves all day, as Bountiful was whistled for a disproportionate 26 fouls to 14 for the Wildcats. The Braves got to within one at 22-21, but Jodie Warhurst sank a pair of free throws with 1:33 left in the half, and then Heather Hobbs and Heaps both scored from outside, out-side, to give Woods Cross a 28-21 lead at intermission. Behl scored quickly as the third period began, making it 28-23, but Woods Cross ran off eight unanswered un-answered points to take a commanding comman-ding lead. Heaps scored, Hobbs sank two free throws, Heaps scored again, and Jackie Williams hit from the corner. Wilkinson ended en-ded the run with a basket for Bountiful, Boun-tiful, but scores by Hobbs and Warhurst moved the Wildcat lead to 42-25. Bountiful made one final run at Woods Cross in the final period. Trailing 49-34, Jana Murdock scored on a great rebound, and then Kristen Rose stole a pass and outraced everyone downcourt for a basket. She was fouled on the play, and converted the free throw to make it 49-39 with 6:19 left. But Warhurst answered with a hoop, Mason made a pair of free throws, and Woods Cross held Bountiful in check the rest of the way. The Braves lost both Olsen and Murdock to fouls, which hurt their attack. "Our balance has really been great," Wildcat coach Debbie Peel stated afterwards. "Everyone's contributing and helping one another." Indeed, balance is an accurate description. Hobbs and Heaps both had 15 points, Williams 12, Mason 11 and Warhurst 10. After seven league games, every Woods Cross starter is in double figures. For Bountiful, Behl led the way with 13 points, Wilkinson had eight, while Olsen and Rose had seven each. Both Jenny Dredge of Bountiful and Williams of Woods Cross had three-point baskets. The Braves now must contend with Davis in a battle for third. The fourth place team is forced to have a playoff to earn a state berth, so obviously third place is the goal for those two teams. Bountiful will host winless Highland on Thursday, Thurs-day, while Woods Cross will host Viewmont. DAVIS 59 VIEWMONT 58 At Viewmont, the luckless Vikings Vik-ings lost still another heartbreaker, this time to Davis, now 4-3. Viewmont View-mont got three strong performances perform-ances from Julie Stuart with 19 points, Becky Yeates with 18, and Launee Larsen with 14, including two three-pointers. But Davis had great games from Kristin Packer, who had 1 1 points and grabbed 23 rebounds; Heather Peel with 20, and Becky Rees with 14. The win means Davis can finish no worse than fourth, while Viewmont View-mont is still mathematically alive for a playoff berth, but needs help. Davis visits East this afternoon, while Viewmont goes to Woods Cross. The way things are shaping up now, it appears Woods Cross and East will finish in the top two. Bountiful and Davis seem likely to be the other two region teams in the playoff picture. The Braves host Highland an i East, then finish at Viewmont. Oavis travels to East, then hosts Woods Cross and Highland. High-land. The team which can beat East will likely finish in third place. Should the teams tie, they'd playoff play-off for third because both have beaten each other once. A. W V f - . t(r:L Pi! ' C f-i j .
