Show I Sports In The Open Spaces Utah's general game fish season will open May 28 and close Oct. 9. This action was taken by the Fish and Game Commission during dur-ing a recent special two-day meeting. Later opening and earlier closure clos-ure for some waters, creel limits, baits and lures, and other regulations regula-tions for the 1955 angling season will be scheduled during quarterly Commission meetings in April. The May 28 opening date is approximately ap-proximately two weeks earlier than usual and gives a 135-day over-all season as compared to the 122 days of 1954. In setting the earlier date, Commission Com-mission members recognized the three day holiday weekend beginning begin-ning at that time. They noted that the state hatcheries' planting program pro-gram would not be so far advanced ad-vanced as is usual on the opening open-ing day, but felt that any lack in creel return would be more than offset by the opportunity to go afield over the holiday during the earlier season. Other actions included approval of the department's chukar partridge part-ridge program for 1955. This calls for a total production of 20,000 eggs from brood stocks at the Price and Springville game farms. Hunting privileges of five individuals indi-viduals were revoked for a period of five years for involvement in field accidents during 1954. The department was notified to inform in-form six others to appear before the Commission during a special meeting March 4-5. Reports showed show-ed five were involved in hunting accidents one a persistent violator viola-tor of fish and game laws. Failure to appear brings automatic revocation revoca-tion of license privileges. Moved that a department representative rep-resentative be present at all sales of beaver furs wherever state pelts are consigned for auction. Approved a future development program for the Beaver Hatchery as figures from a recent survey at this state facility showed such a program to be economically sound. Listened to and approved a financial fi-nancial report covering the department's de-partment's operation during 1954. Deer Hunt Prepared A total of 4,122 deer were taken on "extra" doe tags purchased by 8,320 hunters during the recent re-cent fall seasons. These and other figures are shown in a final report re-port from Department of Fish and Game headquarters covering the five herd areas where such tags were authorized by the Utah Board of Big Game Control. The Board scheduled the unlimited un-limited sale of extra doe tags for the Antimony, Monroe, Salina, Last Chance-Quitchupah, and La-Sal La-Sal hunting units as a move to alleviate the critical deer-range problem in those areas. Permits were sold at the eight checking stations strategically located lo-cated to serve the five units. Successful Suc-cessful hunters were required to have the extra doe tag validated before leaving the area. A further breadkdown of the figures shows that residents held 5,183 of these tags, non-residents 3,137. Hunter success for all units un-its averaged 49.5. Winter herd counts and spring1 range surveys will show whether the increased harvest of these units has aided the critical winter win-ter range condition, according to game managers. |
