Show Coping With Stess Classes Set Davis County residents who are interested in gaining new skills, becoming better citizens, or enhancing their personal or family life, can find educational opportunities to do so through a series of classes clas-ses being offered by the Davis County Mental Health Center in Layton this fall. AN ASSKRTT VENF.SS training train-ing class specifically designed for youth between the ages of 12 and 17 will begin Oct. 6 from 5-7 p.m. The Thursday evening even-ing course, conducted by George Dunningham, MSW, will provide instruction and practice in such areas as conversational con-versational skills, making and refusing requests, listening and non-verbal communication, communica-tion, self-esteem and peer pressure. Tuition will be $32. On Monday evenings, 6:30-8:30 6:30-8:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 3, pyschotherapist Bruce Woodford Wood-ford will conduct an eight week course in Stress Management. The course will explain the body's stress response and the physical and emotional symptoms symp-toms of stress, and will help to identify personal sources of stress and the functional or not-so-functional adaptations we make to it. THE COURSE will also provide pro-vide exposure to a number of techniques for coping with stress and tension, e.g. problem prob-lem solving skills, controlling unrealistic expectations, relaxation re-laxation and meditation, "people" "peo-ple" skills that can help with tough interpersonal situations and taking personal responsibility. responsi-bility. For (hose who would like to receive an indepth instruction in one particular stress management man-agement tool, a five week course in Relaxation Training and Meditation will be taught by Dr. lleber Kimball beginning begin-ning Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 7-9 p.m. THE CLASS can result in control of various stress-related stress-related symptoms such as ulcers, tension headaches, migraines, and high blood pressure. With the help of clcc-tronic clcc-tronic monitoring (called biofeedback) a person can learn control of automatic body responses such as brain wave frequency, skin temperature temper-ature and muscle tension.
