Show l'r ' Vto JMmd Bo Titles By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports VIEWMONT -- It's been said that the hardest hard-est state championship to win is the first one but the Viewmont cross country team is finding find-ing out that the second one is no easy task in itself. IF YOU recall it was these Vikings that ran away with both the region and then the state titles a year ago in cross country and now the Vikes find themselves in the position of defending de-fending those crowns and there are plenty of other teams out there that want those trophies and titles. One thing the Vikings have going for them though is talent, and they have plenty of it. Last year they were led by senior Brian Fuller, who won the individual title, but he was just about the only senior on the team. The other four point getters for the championship Viking team were either juniors or sophomores so Lynn DuBois had a good nucleus returning to defend the titles. HIS TOP two runners this year are both seniors and good friends in Mike Allen and Reece Kidman. A year ago Mike placed second in the region meet and then was slow ed down at state with an injury but he still managed man-aged to finish ninth, meanwhile Reece was sixth in the region meet and then placed a strong 12th at the state meet. "I'd be lying if I didn't say that these two both have a shot at the individual title. They are both among the top runners in the state. It's great for the team lo have them both on our side because they push each other in practice and in every race. Both of them have worked hard and baring any injury thev'll battle an-one an-one for the title" admitted head coach Lnn DuBois. HIS WORDS are backed up b the fact that in a recent major invitational held at Murray High Mike finished third overall while Recce was sivth. The truth is though they were the top two runners from 4 A as the other finishers in the top six were all 3 A runners in fact they were from Murrav High who won the meet and who many feel could beat an college team around. The Vikings were aNo second in Ihc team standings behind Murrav Thus far this season the Vikings have kno-.k-cd olT Clearfield, Highland, WihkIs Cross and Fast along with the Murrav clloit.
