Show Highland "Rams55 Wildcats SALT LAKE CITY "Highland blocked a little differently on offense than we expected, and also they ran a different defense than w hat we expected, but what it boiled down to was the fact they physically beat us on the line of scrimmage" summarized Larry Eldracher of his clubs 23-6 region loss to the Rams. THE WIN put the Rams right at the front of the class, along with the high flying Darts of Davis, with a 3-0 region record. The loss put the Wildcats back in the pack with a 1-2 mark. The opening minutes of this game were a nightmare for the Cats and their coaches. ... .Woods Cross won the coin toss and elected to receive but on the first play from scrimmage a Mike Farner pass was intercepted by the Rams on the Wildcats 30 yard line. Five plays later John Schmidt of the Rams carried the ball over for six points. On the conversion attempt a bad snap from center sent the extra point team into the fire drill but the Wildcats were able to make the stop so the Rams had to settle for a 6-0 lead. WOODS CROSS had an opportunity to get on the board in the second period when they picked up three first downs in a row and moved the ball down to the Rams fifteen. On first down the Cats called a reverse play to Ron Gomez but the Highland defense was ready and tackled Ron for a seven yard loss. After two tried at picking up the first down the Cats lined up for a field goal try but the ball never got high enough or past the line of scrimmage. Highland then scored on a 42 yard field goal on the last play of the half to make the score 9-0. THE CATS came out in the second half with an on sides kick but they were called offsides which in realty was a blessing since the Rams had recovered the ball near midfield. The Cats kicked the next attempt long and then Highland High-land proceeded to go the full 80 yards in five minutes for the second touchdown. The points came on a Keith Lapoti run. In that third period it was field position more than anything that hindred the Cats as they headed into a strong wind. Several times poor punting yardage enabled the Rams to take over on the Cats side of the 50 yard line. In fact the Rams final score came as a resuilt of a poor punt which landed on the Cats 45 yard line. It only took the Rams a couple of minutes of playing time to once again spring Lapoti loose for six points. The kicks had the score at 23-0. WOODS CROSS did manage to get on the board early in the fourth period after a long pass play from Farner to Travis McBeth got the Cats to the Highland 12 yard line. A play action pass play worked to perfection and Farner Far-ner found Mike Dalley in the endzone. Woods Cross went for the two point conversion but it wasn't to be. |
