The man who often believes be-lieves that he has the choicest stock available often learns how far behind be-hind the times he is when he sees the champions at the fairs. No one likes to feel that he is not producing high grade stock and it is largely a matter of lack of understanding which prevents him from having the best. In this way, the educational advantages of the fairs repay the various communities for the great amount of money spent in putting on the exhibitions. California is this year celebrating the 75th anniversary of her state fair, which was started in a music hall in San Francisco in 1854. Other western west-ern states are joining han'ds with California in putting on this year's state fairs and as the climax, the great national and international exposition, ex-position, such as the Chicago International, Inter-national, Kansas City American Royal, Roy-al, Pacific International at Portland, and the Christmas IJve Stock Show at Los Angeles. The greatest representatives repre-sentatives of various breeds are shown at these latter expositions, which are attended by many thousands thous-ands of persons interested in better live stock. Special attention is given the junior departments, so that in the 3'ounger generation of present day agriculturists, a splendid sentiment towards better breeding is being developed, de-veloped, which will mean a great This is "county fair" season in all of the agricultural districts over the land. It is the tirro of year when the farmer and breeder begins to groom up his choicest live stock for exhibition before neighbors, friends and possible buyers. We of the west take our live stock fairs very seriously seri-ously and it is well that we do, for the county, district and state fairs have been largely instrumental in so greatly improving the quality and the earning power of our flocks and herds. The county and state fairs are centuries old. For many generations, the stockmen of England have proudly proud-ly displayed their best stock at the fairs. Back in feudal times, there was great rivalry for honors at these exhibitions and the very foundation of many of the present day breeds of cattle, swine and sheep emanated from the prize winning displays at the fairs. The strong competition among neighbors at the smaller fairs in England finally resulted in national nation-al shows, such as the Smithfield show In London, wyhere the champions of the county fairs competed for the highest possible honors in national, and later, international competition. In th'is country, nearly every agricultural agri-cultural county of any importance holds a county fair. These fairs begin be-gin in mid-summer. Then come the . state fair, which is called the Diam-. Diam-. ond Jubilee California State Fair and Western States Exposition. Such an event means not only that Californ-ians Californ-ians will have opportunity oi.' seeing the host products of other western states, but it also aids in bringing about a better understanding among the people of the western country. California's county fairs started early in August, then the state fair is to be held August 31 to September 10, and after that, many of the important im-portant county and district fairs are to be held. The climax for the live stock interests of western states will be the great Christmas Live Stock Show, to be held at the Los Angeles Union Stock Yards, November 30 to December 7. o deal in making our live stock production pro-duction of vastly improved quality and more profitable. The great benefit of the fairs and expositions is that it permits the bringing together of the cream of our live stock production, where the animals ani-mals may be judged by experts, so that we may have a better understanding under-standing of just what is required in improving our live stock to meet present day standards. These gatherings gather-ings result in better acquaintance, hence a better understanding and serve as sort of a reunion for the benefit of all. The sense of good atured rivalry developed means that the man who loses this season may go back home and develope animals |
