The sails are billowing in youth windsurfing program by Randy Hanskat How do you get an official $30 windsurfing lesson for only $10 and have a free bus ride to Deer Creek thrown in? You go to the Recreation Department and sign up for one of the Thursday classes, that's how. The classes are for ages 12 to adult, and include board, lesson and bus ride. With four weeks of classes now complete, Jane Singer, director of the Youth Outdoor Adventure Program at the Recreation Department, hopes to see enrollment rise. Enrollment jumped from zero in the first class to 21 in the July 12 class, she said. Singer said she originally set up the windsurfing program with only the kids in mind. "With the sport so popular in this area, this is the only way for many of these kids to learn," she explained. But since working out the arrangements with Windsports of Heber she has expanded the inexpensive lessons to adults as well. She says one lesson is all it takes. "It's amazing how easy it is to learn with a lesson, and how hard it is without one," she laughed. The Windsports instructors start each class on land with a windsurfer mock-up illustrating the important aspects of the wind. Later the class hits the water. Each class runs from 9 a.m. to lp.m. Singer, who drives the bus to Deer Creek, said it leaves at 8:15 a.m. Thursday from the west side of Park Avenue across from Snug and returns at 4 p.m. People can drive themselves to Deer Creek if they choose, she added. The success rate has been phenomenal, said Singer. "One of the first students went home and told his mom it was the best day of his life," she said. But one problem Singer has found and a possible reason the classes got off to a slow start is that many Park City kids don't know how to swim. Toremedy that deficiency she has started the Park City Swim School, but that, she says, is another story. Students who want more than one day of windsurfing can, for $2, take another bus ride to Deer Creek on Fridays. On those days the board rental must be paid by the student, but the Recreation Department will furnish paddleboats and rafts free. The bus leaves at 9 a.m. from City Park. Windsurfing is part of the Youth Outdoor Adventure Program designed to keep Park City kids busy, in the summer. Singer said two additional trips (not windsurfing) are scheduled, Super Slides on July 25 and Lagoon on August 14. For more information call the Recreation Department at 649-9461. |
