Show Harris, Makarewicz not cowed by East Canyon Triathlon i by Nan Chalat Utah's leading triathlete Barry Makarewicz picked up where he left off last season by winning the East Canyon Triathlon last Saturday. He beat his own winning time from last year by 3 minutes and 84 seconds, finishing the half-mile swim, 6.2 mile run and 33-mile bike ride in 2 , hours, 18 minutes and 39 seconds. According to race organizer Richard Goddard of Guthrie Bicycles in Salt Lake, the weather was perfect and the water temperature in the reservoir was several degrees warmer than last year. Of 257 registrants, 251 finished the race, he said. Among those contestants were nine Parkites including Madonna Harris, who raced her way to the top of the women's class. Her time was 2 hours, 37 minutes and 40 seconds. Each of the three events began and ended at the East Canyon State Park marina. After completing a triangular half-mile swim in the reservoir the racers donned their Adidas and Nikes for a 10-kilometer run down the steep hill toward Morgan. They returned over the same route, climbing back up to the changing areas to grab their bicycles. The final leg of the race took contestants through Morgan and Henefer and back up the same hill, where they encountered a herd of cows loitering on the pavement. Several of the bikers had to slow down to dodge the unexpected obstacles, Goddard said. Despite the intrusion Ron Larsen of Ogden kept pace with Makarewicz and finished in second place with a time of 2:27:07. Brad Mullen of Salt Lake was third with 2:32:10. Madonna Harris's time put her in 12 th place overall. Claudia Christiansen Christian-sen was one minute and 46 seconds behind Harris, earning second place in the women's class. Robin Masters, who led the pack in the water (including the men), finished third in 2 hours, 42 minutes and 49 seconds. Park City resident Roxanne Toly was the fifth woman to cross the finish line. Her time was 2:51 :32. Triathletes will have another crack at testing their skills at the Heber Valley Triathlon on August 18. The event is a qualifier for the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii this October. The Heber race includes a one-mile swim in Deer Creek Reservoir, a 41 -mile bike ride and a 13.1 -mile run. |
